The Right Choice: Urgent Care or Emergency Center?

When do you go to the emergency center and when do you go to an urgent care center? Making the right choice when you need care could save time, money — and maybe, your life. However, if you are ever uncertain, call  “911”.

Urgent care centers specialize in treating illnesses and injuries that are not life-threatening, but still need quick relief. In contrast, emergency centers are for life-threatening emergencies. The following warning signs from the American College of Emergency Physicians could indicate a medical emergency. Call “911” for an ambulance, and ask to be taken to Gordon Hospital:

  • Fainting
  • Difficulty in breathing, shortness of breath
  • Sudden dizziness, weakness, or change in vision
  • Continuous bleeding
  • Coughing up or vomiting blood
  • Severe or persistent vomiting
  • Chest or abdominal pain or pressure
  • Change in mental status (such as an unusual behavior, confusion, difficulty walking)
  • Sudden severe pain anywhere in the body
