Focused on Your Surgery

The Day of Your Surgery

The following reminders and recommendations will help you be most comfortable on the day of your surgery:

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight of  the day of surgery. (Your surgery could be delayed or canceled if you eat or drink.)
  • Arrive at the Outpatient Surgery Center at your designated time.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and leave all valuables at home.
  • Remember to wear your glasses instead of contact lenses.
  • Have a responsible adult available to drive you home.

Once you arrive at the hospital, you will change into a hospital gown, and a nurse will begin your IV. At least one family member or friend may stay with you in your room before and after surgery. Your operating room nurse or anesthetist will take you to the operating room. During your surgery, he or she will keep your family updated on how you are doing.

Your Recovery

You will be under the constant care of the recovery room nurse from the moment you enter the recovery room after surgery. Your blood pressure, heart rate and breathing will be closely monitored. Don’t be afraid to speak out if you are uncomfortable. Your nurse will give you medication to relieve your pain.

Your surgeon will meet with your family to inform them how your surgery went and to answer their questions. When you are fully awake, you will be taken to your inpatient or outpatient room for post-recovery.
