Free Diabetes Screening Planned

More than eight million Americans are unaware that they have diabetes, and nearly 86 million are already pre-diabetic.

According to Gordon Hospital officials, diabetes is a condition in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life.

In 2012, 9.3% of the United States’ population was living with diabetes with 1.7 million new cases diagnosed each year. Diabetes is even more prevalent in seniors with 11.8 million diabetic Americans age 65 and older.

“The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles,” says Gordon Hospital’s Pam Tucker, RN.

“Diabetes can lead to serious complications and premature death, but people with diabetes can take steps to control the disease and lower the risk of complications.”

According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes was the 7th leading cause of death in the United States in 2010.

To learn more about this disease, Gordon Hospital is hosting a free diabetes screening on Monday, Nov. 10, 2014 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in Conference Room A. While the screenings are free, registration is required as space is limited. Call 706-602-7800, ext. 2305 to register.

“The event will include a free finger-stick blood sugar screening,” Tucker added. “For the most accurate results, do not eat or drink anything after midnight prior to the screening.”

Refreshments will be provided to participants following their screenings. For more information on this event, please call 706-602-7800 ext. 2305.
