Gordon Hospital appoints new chief hospitalist

Gordon Hospital, a member of Adventist Health System, is pleased to announce that current hospitalist Ted Pennel, MD, will now serve as chief hospitalist.

Hospitalists are active participants in patient care, research and leadership in the medical field. Their role is to improve the overall performance of healthcare systems.

“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Pennel on our team,” said Pete Weber, president and CEO of Gordon Hospital. “His knowledge and experience are integral in continuing the success of our hospitalist program. The community and our patients will benefit directly from his commitment to service.”

Dr. Pennel has been a part of Gordon Hospital and the Calhoun community since 1988, having his own private practice for several years, as well as serving at Redmond Regional Medical Center as Chief of their hospitalist program. He will provide oversight of Gordon Hospital’s hospitalist program and the hospitalist clinical initiatives.

Dr. Pennel achieved his undergraduate degree at the University of Georgia and is a graduate of the Medical College of Georgia. He completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville.

Dr. Pennel is a member of the Gordon County Medical Society where he served as president. He is also a member of the Society of Hospital Medicine. In 2015, Dr. Pennel was the recipient of Gordon Hospital’s “His Touch in My Hands Award” for best reflecting the hospital’s mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ.

Dr. Pennel has served on multiple Gordon Hospital committees. On the Medical Executive Committee, he has served as chief of staff, vice chief of staff, and secretary. Additionally, he has served on Gordon Hospital’s Critical Chair Committee as chairman.

Dr. Pennel resides in Calhoun with his wife, LaRae. His children are Sam, Buck, Malone and IsaBella. Outside of his profession, he enjoys bible study, attending UGA football games, and swimming.

To assist Dr. Pennel in his many duties, Dr. Tessa Gibson will serve as an assistant chief hospitalist. Dr. Gibson, who has been a hospitalist at Gordon since 2013, will take on the leadership roles of leading the doctor communication/HCAHPS program and continue to work with Charma Cochran, NP, to provide leadership for the transition program.
