If you think that the H1N1 flu that we heard so much about before Christmas is gone, then you might want to think again. Health officials nationally and across the state are expecting another wave of illness this spring. That’s why Gordon Hospital, Calhoun OB/GYN Associates and Wal-Mart are teaming up to offer a free H1N1 Flu Clinic at the Wal-Mart Supercenter here in Calhoun on Friday, February 19, 2010 from 9 am until 4 pm or until shots are gone.
“The virus died down a bit over the last couple of months,” says Sandra Webb, infection control manager at Gordon Hospital. “But we do expect a resurgence of the virus this spring. The best way to protect you and your family is to get vaccinated.”
Initially the vaccine was reserved for those at high risk, but since the first wave of the virus is over, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has lifted the restrictions on who could receive the vaccine. Now, anyone who would like it will be eligible. Although it is still recommended for those at high risk, which includes the following populations:
· Pregnant women
· People who live with or care for infants younger than 6 months of age
· Healthcare and emergency medical personnel
· Anyone from 6 months through 24 years of age
· Anyone from 25 to 64 years of age with certain chronic medical conditions or a weakened immune system
The vaccines will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. No appointments are necessary.
