The Harris Radiation Therapy Center at Gordon Hospital recently celebrated their third anniversary since their opening in 2012.
Lanell Jacobs, RN, MS, director of Oncology Services for Gordon Hospital says the last three years of operation for the Harris Radiation Therapy Center (HRTC) have been extremely successful. Harris Radiation Therapy center director and radiation oncologist Lorie Hughes, MD, has practiced at the center since its opening, and Sheela Hanasoge, MD, PhD, joined their team in September of 2015.
"In our first year, we far exceeded the projected number of treatments we expected to deliver," said Jacobs. "Since then, we have treated more than 450 patients. Now, in year three, we have expanded our medical staff by bringing on another radiation oncologist."
The center has treated many different types of cancer, including cancers affecting the brain, throat, sinus, esophagus, lung, skin, breast, stomach, pancreas, colorectal, bone, spine, kidney, prostate, and other areas of the body.
In addition to the radiation treatments, the HRTC also provides many cancer support services including nurse navigation, exercise classes, CREATION Health lifestyle support and education (a healthy-living program), support groups for patients and caregivers, nutritional support, mental health counseling, a recovery boutique, and spiritual counseling.
"Until we opened in 2012, all cancer patients in Calhoun and Gordon County had no choice but to drive out of town to get the radiation treatment they needed," said Jacobs. "We are thrilled that we have been able to provide this service right here at home for the residents of our community. No longer are they required to drive 45 minutes or longer each day to receive a 10-minute treatment. And now, since we expanded to bring North Georgia Cancer Care onboard in 2014, we truly provide comprehensive cancer care for Gordon County."
