Keeping Kids Safe
Keeping Kids Safe with Superhero Mac

(Calhoun, Ga) — There is a new Superhero in town.
While he may not be faster than a speeding locomotive or able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, this colorful character with a larger than life smile does something much more important.
“It’s all about keeping kids safe,” said Courtney Taylor, director of Gordon EMS, a service of Gordon Hospital. “This is something that we’ve worked toward for a long time and we are thrilled to see it come to fruition.”
Mac the Medic, the Gordon EMS Superhero of Safety, made his debut appearance recently at the Northwest Georgia Christian Academy. There, he spoke to the children about various safety issues and gave them a tour of a Gordon EMS ambulance.
“For years we’ve wanted to offer a program on safety issues for the children of our community,” Taylor added. “But we wanted to deliver it in a way that was more engaging and be something that they would better remember.”
EMT Woody Davis, who has more than 20 years of public safety experience, joined with Taylor to research and plan the concept that would ultimately result in Mac the Medic. After obtaining blessings and funding from the Gordon Hospital administration and the Gordon Hospital Auxiliary, Mac is now ready to work.
“The Auxiliary, when presented with the idea of Mac the Medic, saw this as an engaging, memorable tool with which to present an icon of our hospital at schools, fairs, parades, and other community events,” said Sue Rathbun, co-president of the hospital’s Auxiliary volunteer group. “When children see Mac, he will not only bring big smiles to their faces, but our hope is that he will also place in their minds a positive image of our hospital and important information on their personal safety.”
Mac has a complete curriculum for children that teaches bicycle safety, car safety, water safety, household safety, as well as what to do in an emergency situation. He will also offer the segment, “All About Ambulances” to help children learn the purpose of emergency medical transportation and to help them to not be afraid of them.
In addition to being a safety teaching tool, Mac will also strive to help further the mission of Gordon Hospital, which is to extend the healing ministry of Christ to all they serve.
“Mac will be notified whenever we have a young patient in the hospital that could benefit from his visit,” Taylor added. “Mac will be happy to visit any child that is a patient in the hospital.”
Mac the Medic is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. for school and public appearances, as well as special weekend community events. To schedule an appearance by Mac, please contact the Gordon Hospital Marketing Department by calling 706-602-7800, ext. 2305. There is no charge for his appearance; however a two-week advance notice is requested.
