Topping Out Ceremony Set for Gordon Hospital Construction

Community members are invited to make their mark on Gordon Hospital.

Gordon Hospital is hosting a “topping out” and beam-signing ceremony at the hospital construction site on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 4 p.m. The ceremony is free and open to the public.

“We are asking individuals to become a lasting part of our latest construction project by signing a steel beam that will be used to finish off this phase,” said Kim Brazell, marketing and public relations director at Gordon Hospital. “It is a fun way for the community to become involved in the construction.

This milestone will commemorate this phase of the hospital’s $37 million expansion, which began in January 2014.

The expansion includes the creation of a new patient tower entrance on the North, or Red Bud Road side, which will be a more direct route to visit and see patients in the hospital’s inpatient areas including the newest patient rooms like the Progressive Care Unit. Essentially, all inpatient areas will be accessed through this new entrance while outpatient services and the medical office building will continue to be accessed through the existing entrance on the East, or Curtis Parkway side. By separating the two, the hospital hopes to alleviate long treks throughout the building, making it easier for the patient or visitor to get to their desired location by a more direct route, creating a more cohesive flow.

In addition, the construction will also help expand the capacity of the Emergency Department. “Our current Emergency Department, which opened in 2008, has exceeded its capacity for the last several years seeing more than 38,000 patients each year. The new construction will add capacity for up to 33 patient exam rooms to the department along with new “walk in” and ambulance entrances in order to meet the growing need of our community,” says Pete Weber, president and CEO of Gordon Hospital.

Other facets of the expansion and renovation include the:

    - New addition of an Intensive Care Unit, raising the ICU bed count from eight to 10.
    - New Patient Care Unit that will house 24 beds (a relocation of current beds in the hospital to this new location when complete).
    - Building and relocation of the parking lot and creation of two, separate entrances for entering the hospital.
    - The North Entrance, which will be the entrance to the inpatient rooms and new Gift Shop, and the East Entrance (current main entrance of the
hospital), which will be used primarily for outpatient services and access to the medical office building.
    - The current main lobby of the hospital (future East Entrance) will be renovated and get a face lift.
    - The current helipad will be relocated closer to the new ambulance entrance of the emergency department to allow for better access for
transferring critical patients to tertiary hospital partners.

“This is an exciting project for us,” says Weber. “It’s a large undertaking; however, it is necessary for our continued growth and it will make things easier for our patients and visitors by streamlining access to our services.”
